Spring time and Baby Chicks

Spring time and Baby Chicks

Spring time is often associated with new birth and growth as many animals have it wired in them to produce young at this time of year due to the abundance of feed and the pleasant weather. The emus naturally hatch out late July early August in most areas, which is a bit before spring officially starts but this may be due to the dads wanting to off the nest before it gets too hot.

For us we have chicks hatching from the start of July through to September holidays so there is plenty of opportunities for visitors to get to see these little stripey fluff balls. this year has been no exception with many people coming to visit the chicks and see them hatching.

The chicks spend their first day sleeping off the hard job of hatching and then they are up and running, within 1 week they are a bit more of a challenge to catch as they have found their feet and a love of running.

The chicks have their stripes until they are around 3 months old when they transition from their soft chick down to a more feathery type of feather, their final transformation is at 12 -18months when they get their adult feathers which are weather proof.

We are enjoying a lovely green start to spring as we have had a lovely wet and warm winter resulting in plenty of fresh greenery around including clovers which are a great starting food source for the little ones.
